We have partnered with subsea training specialist DRIFT Offshore to develop and deliver a Pathway to ROV – 101 Essentials, an industry-aligned programme designed to equip students with the technical knowledge, practical skills, and career access required to enter the fast-growing subsea and offshore sectors.

Course overview

This intensive programme provides foundational knowledge and hands-on experience in the core systems that power and control modern subsea ROVs.

Training focuses on three key technical domains:

  • Electrical Systems
  • Hydraulic Systems
  • Networking & Data Communications

Through a combination of classroom learning and practical exercises, participants will develop the skills required to support, maintain and troubleshoot ROV systems in line with IMCA R002 guidance.

Assessment includes:

  • Written theory examinations
  • Practical fault-finding tasks
  • System interpretation exercises

What you will learn

Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the ROV industry, ROV classifications and career progression routes
  • Understand core principles of electricity, fluid power and data transmission
  • Identify and describe key components within ROV systems
  • Interpret schematics and system diagrams
  • Carry out structured fault-finding and troubleshooting procedures
  • Perform basic manoeuvring, depth control and station-keeping of a Seaeye Falcon ROV
  • Understand safe working practices in subsea operations
  • Develop a fundamental understanding of planned maintenance procedures

Entry requirements

This course is designed for individuals with a technical background who wish to pursue a career aligned with IMCA R002 guidance.

Applicants must hold one or more of the following (plus a successful short interview with the trainer):

  • A recognised trade qualification in Electronics/Electrical, Hydraulics or Mechanical Engineering
  • A nationally recognised higher education qualification with at least one year’s trade experience
  • In certain cases, extensive relevant industry experience may be considered

Certification and outcomes upon completion

On successful completion, participants will receive:

  • A Course Completion Certificate from UHI North, West and Hebrides
  • An IMCA ROV Pilot Logbook
  • This programme provides a recognised entry pathway towards a career as an ROV Pilot or ROV Technician.
