We’ve joined with training specialist DRIFT Offshore to develop and deliver a new, industry-aligned course to equip students with the essential technical knowledge and career access to enter the fast-growing subsea and offshore sectors.

Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) Systems Training

This course provides a solid foundation in the core systems that power and control modern subsea ROVs. Combining classroom learning with hands-on training, it focuses on three key technical domains:

  • Electrical Systems
  • Hydraulic Systems
  • Networking & Data Communications

By the end of the course, you will have the knowledge and practical skills to support, maintain, and troubleshoot ROV systems in line with IMCA requirements. Assessment will include both written exams (theory) and practical tasks (fault finding and system interpretation).

Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the ROV industry, types of ROVs, and career progression opportunities.
  • Understand the basic principles of electricity, fluid power, and data transmission.
  • Identify and describe key components within ROV systems.
  • Interpret schematics and system diagrams.
  • Carry out basic fault-finding and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Perform basic manoeuvring, depth control, and station-keeping of a Seaeye Falcon ROV.
  • Understand key practices for maintaining a safe working environment.
  • Develop a fundamental understanding of planned maintenance procedures.

On successful completion, participants will receive:

  • A course completion certificate from UHI North, West and Hebrides
  • An IMCA ROV Pilot Log Book

Entry requirements

This course is designed for individuals with a technical background who wish to pursue a career as an ROV Pilot or Technician, in line with IMCA R002. Applicants should hold one or more of the following (plus a successful short interview with our trainer):

  • Recognised trade qualification in Electronics/Electrical, Hydraulics, or Mechanical Engineering
  • A nationally recognised higher education qualification with at least 1 year’s trade experience
    In certain cases, extensive relevant industry experience may also be considered.
